Transforming complex survey data into actionable maps through AI-powered automation and intuitive design.
Role: Senior Product Designer
Duration: 6 months
Challenge
Mach9 users struggled to navigate and utilize the platform effectively, facing multiple friction points:
Cluttered interface riddled with excessive popups and significant design debt
Undiscoverable toolbar that left users unable to access key functionality
Data displayed for algorithms, not humans – information was formatted for ML processing rather than user comprehension, preventing users from extracting value from their geospatial data
Beyond interface issues, the company faced systemic design process challenges:
Unscalable design system with engineers building components outside of established patterns
Feature-driven roadmap that prioritized requests over actual user needs
Lack of structured feedback loops between design and development teams
What I Did
Through user research and customer interviews, I identified three critical improvement areas and established a scalable foundation for future growth:
Redesigned core navigation and data display
Fixed the layer panel to present data in a user-friendly format rather than ML-optimized structure
Relocated and redesigned the toolbar to an easily discoverable position with in-tool instructions and contextual tools that guide users through workflows
Moved display settings to a more accessible location for quick adjustments
Established a scalable design system In parallel, I built a design system with direct GitHub integration, enabling seamless management and updates while ensuring engineering and design remained aligned. This created a sustainable foundation that eliminated component fragmentation and established proper feedback loops between teams.
